A Diwali adventure for children

The sky has lost its light—and we need a team of Little Light Keepers to bring it back!

Join Joyful Plates for an afternoon of Diwali stories, making, cooking, games and dancing. Children will take on challenges around the room, collect Light Energy for their team and help relight the sky together.

✨ Your Little Light Keeper mission

At the start of the adventure, each child will receive a coin pouch or envelope. As they join in, they’ll collect Light Coins to spend at the Diwali Shop later.

Alongside their personal coins, teams will collect Light Energy—gems or glow stickers that go into a shared team jar. This is a way to see the light grow as everyone takes part. There are no winners or losers: every team’s Light Energy will be combined in one large jar during the Great Relighting.

🪔 What’s in store

📖 Author moment and Diwali story

We’ll begin with a short reading from the host’s own book, followed by a Diwali picture book. The story will introduce the Little Light Keepers and their mission.

🎨 Stained-glass inspired diya craft

Make a colourful stained glass-inspired diya, then hold it up to the light to see it glow.

🏃 Light Relay

Work as a team to carry a battery tea light on a spoon through a playful obstacle course.

🌑 Banish the Darkness

Take turns tossing bean bags or rolled socks to knock down the “darkness” targets.

🍴 Make Diwali treats

Join two hands-on cooking activities:

- Mix a nut-free Diwali Chivda with cornflakes or puffed rice, roasted chana, raisins and mild spices.

- Shape no-bake Barfi Diamonds and decorate them.

✨ Golden Quiz Trail

Listen to each question, huddle with your team, then run together to the True or False answer zone. Discover facts about Diwali, diyas, rangoli and the different communities that celebrate.

🌟 The Great Relighting

Watch all the teams’ Light Energy come together in one central jar as we announce that the sky has been relit.

💃 Dance finale

Celebrate together with a simple follow-along dance and a chance to dance freely.

🛍️ Diwali Shop and closing

Children can use their Light Coins to choose items at the Diwali Shop. Every child will receive a Little Light Keeper badge, regardless of how many coins they have left. Copies of the host’s book will also be available at the entrance.

Allergens information

The Barfi Diamonds activity uses milk powder and condensed milk. Please include any relevant dietary or allergy information when registering.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the many lands on which we meet, work and live, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present - people who have sung their songs, danced their dances and told their stories on these lands for thousands of generations, and who continue to do so.
